It is a pretty safe bet that benchmarking is one simple strategy you can use immediately to tame that beast of a bill! What you learn from this overview will help you set goals to cut costs and create efficiencies.

So let’s get started…what is benchmarking? And more importantly, why do you need to do it?

Benchmarking is the snapshot point of reference you use in order to see if the process you are currently using is working or not.

Benchmarking is a strategy The Bill Police has applied to wireless cost management very effectively. The first step is to set your benchmark and then measure your actual costs against that mark to determine optimization results.

Here’s an example:

 

See that red line above? That’s the benchmark. It represents where our customer’s cost per device started before The Bill Police began to manage their wireless bill; it is the snapshot we were talking about earlier.

Now, the blue/green bars are the actual cost per device for each month that we managed the bill. You will also notice that there is a varying amount of space between the original red benchmark and the blue/green bar graphs. That space equals savings! It is the amount we achieved for this customer each month. Yowza! We are so glad they asked for help!

See that huge gap in the last few months? We changed the rate plans for this customer…resulting in big savings. And by using benchmarking, we could see the direct correlation between tactics and results. This is a very effective strategy to tame your wireless costs!

Your company’s cell phone bill is most likely one of its greatest expenses. Most employees need a “smartphone” to get emails and directions, and use it for other business purposes. So with that in mind, we wanted to share three ways you can cut down your bill.

1. Window Shop

Window shopping is what you do when you’re considering purchasing, but you’re still in the information gathering stage. It works the same way for cell phone planning. This requires a bit of legwork on your part, but this is also something you can delegate to an employee. Have them gather key points such as Cost Per Line, Cost Per Minute, and Cost Per Kilobyte. And don’t even bother with the small fish at your local mall (chances are they will tell you two different things anyway); go straight to the source by calling the company’s main line and asking to speak with a manager or supervisor. Gather a quote from the major players and then compare!

2. Get An App For That

There are so many apps out there that it’s borderline ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome, that is. There are many apps that can help you cut down on your cell phone texting, minutes, and data. WhatsApp is an App for texting that works across all the four big devices (BlackBerry, iPhone, Google Android, and Nokia). There are a variety of other apps that can help with calling minutes such as Facebook Messenger or Google Apps. Lastly, an App like Onavo compresses your data so that you can stay within your plan’s limits. These aren’t the only apps either, all that’s required is a simple search.

3. Make The Most of Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the best friend that you never had. When you’re at home, even if the signal is bad, there’s no reason to go to data usage. We have found that if you “Turn Off Mobile Data Usage” (usually under your phone’s “Settings”) on your phone, your phone tends to mysteriously have a stronger grip on that Wi-Fi signal. Do you really have to check your email NOW? Chances are that it can probably wait until you get to a place with Wi-Fi. Using Wi-Fi is the best way to avoid data overages and stick within your plan’s limits.

If you have employees on the road, I’m sure you’ve heard the age-old excuse of “I had to use the Maps feature — I was lost!” after a huge data charge. Well, as always, there’s an app for that!

The HERE app makes it easy for people to get around in a world of constant change. Whether they’re on foot, public transport or in a car, your employees can use the HERE app to guide them with accurate maps that are always available.

So, how does it save you from sucking up all your data? The App works even without an Internet connection in more than 100 countries. With maps saved on your phone, it can find places like the nearest hotel or restaurant and get directions with voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation. It also gives users live traffic info and speed limit warnings to keep them within the limits.
