Our mobile society sure embraces new technology. We’ve got to try it, test it. Will it deliver the performance we need for the right price? It seems remarkably similar to taking a new car out for a spin. And that’s literally what one technology journalist did to try out Project Fi.
You may remember in a previous blog when we talked about Google’s Project Fi and how it was working to create a seamless wireless experience by working with two of the big cellular providers, Sprint and T-Mobile, and pairing it with local Wi-Fi. Well, when Forbes contributor Larry Magid tested out Project Fi using a Nexus 5 & Fi SIM card, he truly took to the open road.
Working from the inside out, Larry placed a call utilizing the Wi-Fi inside his house and the connection was good. Next, he ventured outside walking around the block to where he was certain the phone would have made the jump from his home’s Wi-Fi to cellular service. The transition was seamless, he reported, also citing that his neighborhood is a T-Mobile dead zone, so he believes this was where Sprint would have picked up. Then finally he took to the road taking Project Fi for the proverbial test drive.
So when the pedal hit the metal did the performance live up to the hype?
Larry experienced a conversation with… drum roll, please… no dropped calls. Project Fi’s delivery of service was relatively smooth with only a few weak spots during the test drive. Of course, he says the experience could vary in different areas, but the good performance left him considering a service switch. Be sure to read his full story here.
